The Oculus Quest 2 is definitely the best-seller when it comes to VR headsets.

As Oculus is a division of Facebook Inc., you may understand its major downside: the Facebook log-in requirement.

Basically, you can’t use your Oculus unless you agree to create a Facebook account or use your personal account.

This sounds like horrible news for all those users who don’t want to share their online activity and scores with their friends, families, and social circle.

Also, having your VR headset so dependent on your Facebook account means that your social media account may have an impact on your log-in process.

How? Simple.

If your Facebook account gets suspended due to various reasons, you’ll lose all access to your Oculus Quest 2 and the games you purchased.

Hence, if your Facebook account gets hacked, you’ll lose access to your Oculus Quest 2 and every game purchased on the headset.

Oculus Quest headsets, soon-to-be Meta Quest headsets, did not require using a Facebook account before the fall of 2020.

Once the Oculus Quest 2 headset was released, this requirement was implemented.

It is said that sometime in 2022, this mandatory request will be dropped. For now, the future of the Oculus settings is unknown.

Can I Use Oculus Without Facebook?

No, you can’t. As for now, it is mandatory to use a Facebook account.

There may be an alternative for people who don’t want to use their personal account for various reasons.

If you don’t want to merge your Facebook account to your Oculus headset and you also don’t want to spend more money for the business version, you can always create a new Facebook account just for the purpose of using your headset without sharing other information with your online community.

If you want to create the Oculus account with Facebook on Oculus Quest (or Meta Quest 2) you have to follow these simple instructions:

  • Open your browser and go to the Oculus website or you can install the app on your phone by accessing your Google Play store or Apple store.

  • After doing so, you will have to choose between two options: “Log in with a Facebook”, if you already have a Facebook account which you want to use, or “Have an Oculus account”. Then, turn on your Oculus Quest headset.

  • On the Oculus app, select the Oculus Quest or Quest 2 to pair the VR headset with your Facebook account and phone.

If you don’t have a Facebook account, don’t worry. Do this if you need to make one first:

Tap the “Sign up” option at the bottom of the page. A new window will pop up.

    • Here you must fill in the correct information in the given sections and after that press “Sign up”. Now, your new Facebook account is created!

    • After that, go back to the Oculus window and click “Login with Facebook”.

    • Enter your password and click the log-in icon.

    • Lastly, turn on your headset and select your Oculus device on the app to pair the VR headset with your Facebook account and phone.

Either if you create a throwaway Facebook account or use your personal account, you can change the privacy settings if you don’t want to share your online activities with your Facebook community.

You can do so by opening the Oculus settings. Then, go to Privacy and limit the audience.

We suggest you choose the option “Only Me” if you want to choose the safest option so no one (but you) can see any activities on your timeline.

How to Use Oculus Without Facebook?

There is another solution for anyone who’s vehement on not creating a new Facebook account or not sharing their personal account: the Oculus Quest 2 Business.

You can get the only version of Oculus headset which does not require any Facebook log-in, but it will cost extra $500 more than the consumer version.

With this headset, you can open an Oculus account without Facebook on Oculus Quest 2 business. If you think it’s worth it, go for it.

What Is There To Miss On Your Oculus Account Without Facebook?

To be fair, not much. You won’t get access to any social features and you won’t be able to stream on Oculus remotely.

Also, your Oculus device will not appear on the list of your devices on your smartphone.

If you would like to be able to access all of these features, these differences might weigh in on your decision.

Is Facebook Necessary On Other VR Headsets?

You can always choose another VR Headset from another company.

There are other companies which do not require the Facebook log-in in order to access your headset’s features.

But, when it comes to Oculus VR headsets, they all require a Facebook account login before you can access the features of the headset.

Of course, except for the Oculus for Business.

You can do some research on which VR headset is best suited for you.

Take into consideration all factors which might influence your decision from price point to any features and privacy settings.

Bottom Line – It’s Easier To Create a Facebook Account Than To Avoid Using It

If you own the Oculus Quest 2 VR Headset, the only option you have if you want to access it is creating a Facebook account.

As we previously mentioned, one way to safely explore the features of the VR headset is to create a throwaway Facebook account and remember to change your privacy settings.

If creating a Facebook account is no debatable matter for you, then you need to reconsider purchasing the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset or wait until a new update where no Facebook log-in is required pops up.

Until then, the easiest choice you can make is create a Facebook account.
